An Initiative for Art and Research

Researchers

Urban Fauna Laboratory is a long-term research project begun in 2011 by artists Alexey Buldakov and Anastasia Potemkina; they were later joined by architect Ekaterina Zavialova.

The Laboratory considers the city a natural reservoir for thousands of species competing for habitat. It offers a platform for the study of parasitic and symbiotic relationships and mutual adaptation in urban environments. Buldakov graduated from the Russian State University for the Humanities, Moscow, with a degree in social anthropology. From 1998 to 2002 he was a member of Radek Community, a group of artists and political activists in Russia. Potemkina is an artist and architect. She graduated from the Moscow Architectural Institute, Moscow specializing in experimental architectural planning. Zavialova completed the Master’s program at the Southern California Institute of Architecture, where she was part of the XLab Studio. Recent exhibitions include The Way of Enthusiasts, Casa dei Tre Oci, 13th Architecture Biennale, Venice, 2012. Buldakov and Potemkina live and work in Moscow; Zavialova lives and works in New York.
